About the Role

Fusion Media Group is seeking a Scala engineer to help expand and maintain our Kinja publishing platform. You’ll work together with product managers, designers, and our growing engineering team to develop interesting new product experiences for the company, helping to expand our successful e-commerce campaigns and to improve the platform which powers the company’s beloved brands like Gizmodo, Lifehacker, Jezebel, Deadspin, The Onion, The A.V. Club, ClickHole, The Root, Fusion, and sees in excess of 90 million unique users each month.

We’re looking for engineers who either have experience in building web services in Scala or have a strong background in another mainstream programming language, and interested in expanding their knowledge in functional programming and Scala.  You’d be working closely with front-end engineers and product owners to build the Scala and Play Framework based microservices and other server-side components for Kinja’s new features. The ideal candidate has a drive to learn and a willingness to teach. They prefer a collaborative approach to design and architecture, no matter how big or small.  



  • Experience programming in Scala
  • Core knowledge of basic data structures and algorithms
  • Experience with building and consuming HTTP/JSON services
  • Experience with MySQL or other SQL solutions




  • Experience with functional programming in a language other than Scala (Haskell, Clojure, OCaml etc.)
  • Experience with Play! Framework
  • Experience with RabbitMQ, Redis
  • Experience with AWS


This is a full time position at Onion Inc’s Chicago Headquarters.
